Queens Modern: The Architects

Welcome to Queens Modern: The Architects! This project is a continuation of the Queens Modern project (visit the original homepage here) through a more thorough examination of more than two dozen architectural firms active in Queens and across the region during the mid-20th Century. The firms range from architects, such as A.F. Meissner and Joseph Mathieu, who focused on deco and proto-modern church designs of the 1940s to more prolific firms like Kelly & Gruzen and LaPierre, Litchfield & Partners who secured a diverse array of commissions over a much longer period of time. I delved into several unique and lesser known practitioners such as Clara Coffey, whose landscape architecture firm was quietly among the forefront of community park design of the late 1960s; Jerome Perlstein, whose quirky interventions to industrial warehouses in Long Island City are wholly unlike anything else of the era; and A. H. Salkowitz, who despite designing more than a dozen early shopping centers and thousands of houses on Long Island, has been largely ignored.  Click one of the representative images below to learn more about each of the firms.
