Bousquet, George L. | Honorable Mention | Extant | Jamaica | Bank | 1955 | The former City Savings and Loan is one of several Colonial Revival banks built in the mid-century. The one has a double height semicircular portico fronting a brick faced building topped by a slate covered roof and a white octagonal cupola complete with clock and weathervane. A wing running along Hillside Avenue includes two covered entrances for cars to reach the rear parking area and its roofline is topped by a Jeffersonian wooden railing.
LaPierre Litchfield and Partners | Honorable Mention | Extant | Jackson Heights | Bank | 1955 | The Jackson Heights Savings and Loan Association still stands prominently at this corner of Roosevelt Avenue and Gleane Street, visible from the 7 train line immediately adjacent. The bank is sited on a long triangular lot with a projecting double-height glass entrance. Behind the entrance the rest of the building is one-story with a brick facade and a line of windows along Roosevelt Avenue.
Heller, Simeon | Bronze Plaque for Office Buildings | Demolished | Flushing | Healthcare or Nursing Facility | 1955 | Judging from the award program image, Simeon Heller’s Flushing Medical Building was a simple two-story brick box with a raised entrance and parking at the rear. The structure held 12 offices. Not only did Heller design the building but he was also most likely the owner, hidden behind the name 42-27 Union Street Corporation, which was based out of his architecture office at 38-11 Union Street. The building was demolished sometime in the past few decades and subsequently became a parking lot.
Honorable Mention | Extant | Flushing | Healthcare or Nursing Facility | 1955 | The Donnelly Nursing Home, now Sutton Gardens Senior Living, is a one-story brick building set back from the neighboring residential houses. The materials are brick with white trim. The entrance is topped by a simplified Colonial Revival pediment.
Spindler, Charles M. | Honorable Mention | Extant | Jamaica Estates | Religious Building | 1954 | This convent is part of a much larger religious complex in Jamaica Estates. The convent is built into a hillside below the rest of the complex with the main school building immediately behind it on Dalny Road. The church itself (also an award winner) and rambling monastery are situated on the other side of the campus. The convent has a stone first floor base with two floors above of beige brick. It is unclear if the building is still used as a convent, although it was as late as 2005.
